This is a 36″ x 11″ Porcelain metal sign. I can not claim to know the exact date of manufacture, but I do know that; -it was used when my uncle acquired it in 1968, -it is porcelain on flat steel, not embossed, -the lower left corner is? -it has been stored indoors for at least the last 48 years. Thought it has been dusted many times since then, to the best of my knowledge it has never been waxed in that time period, The shine you see is natural to the porcelain finish. This Piece is in the nicest condition of any porcelain (pre-embossed) sign that I have ever seen. With the exception of one heart wrenching chip in the third top grommet hole, it’s surface would be considered 100% intact. While it may be very close, it is not perfect. There are the occasional pock bubbles typical to porcelain, and there are visible manufacturing errors in the? That manifest as slight off-sets in the white pinstripe border. As these are native to the manufacturing processes, and not incidental damage, I do not believe it will adversely affect the value. Of greater concern are the rust visible on the eyelets and subtle scuffs, which I tried to show in the long angle shot. There are slight signs of rust behind the porcelain against the bottom edge, and a few faint scuffs best described as’broom marks’ in a dozen or so spots on the surface. The rear of the sign is blotchy and ugly, with the glaze having been applied purely as a utilitarian protective coating, with no apparent regard for cosmetics. There are lines of rust spots where the porcelain was broken away from the supports in the glazing kiln, and light spots where the glaze was not applied evenly. It is a little bit rough, but overall, free of major pitting or corrosion. Thank you for looking at this item. The item “Vintage Chew Smoke Mail Pouch 36 porcelain metal sign. FREE SHIPPING!
